Next came the paint.  I started with the burger part of his face, but noticed that the muslin took the paint very unevenly.  2 or 3 coats would be needed.
Contrary to what everyone remembers, Mayor McCheese’s bun is not bun colored, but more of an orange.  I didn’t want him to look totally orange, however.  Bill came up with a way to split the difference.  We painted everything in a yellow-ochre base coat
Then we watered down some orange and just did a sloppy wash over the whole thing.  The effect was perfect.

With this nice textured look to the bun, the burger now looked flat, so I stippled some white on there, which from 5 feet away looked good.
I did paint over the screen on the viewing window, but didn’t plug it up too much.  Here’s a shot from the inside looking out.

It’s a bit tricky to see, but navigable.  I like it better than the alternative of “seeing the wires”.  I don’t like it when it’s obvious where the person sees out.  I know its unavoidable, but I like to hide it as best I can.

We had a bit of a problem with the head not balancing on my head correctly.  This was solved by taking a small divot out of the underside of the top bun and adding “shoulder slots” to make it sit more securely.
Next, I laid the head on a piece of yellow felt and traced around it.  This was going to be the slice of cheese that sticks out around the bun.  After cutting tabs along the inside of the circle, I ironed the tabs down so they laid flat.

Then I hot-glued the tabs to the burger, just under the bun.  Once the glue had dried, I trimmed the cheese to more appropriate dimensions.
For eyes, I just took some Sintra and cut out circles on the band saw.  I love Sintra almost as much as flex glue.  It’s a flat sheet of PVC material that can be heated and shaped to do your bidding.  Nothing fancy here, just circles.  I cut two smaller ones for pupils and painted them black.
