The National Theatre for Children employs professional adult
actors who are knowledgeable, aware, stimulating, fun, caring,
and creative. We pride ourselves in creating an environment
that nurtures actors' creative instincts.
Above all else,
fun prevails!
The National Theatre for Children is a national touring company
that performs shows across the United States. More than 1.5
million elementary students throughout the country will see
a show performed by The National Theatre for Children each year,
making it the largest educational theater in the nation. NTC's
mission is to teach important societal issues to students ages
6 - 13. Various organizations employ us to get their message
across. We count on our actors to represent the company well
and act as ambassadors for our shows' sponsors.
NTC employs approximately 75-100 actors during its season,
which runs August through May. Actors are hired on a contract
to contract basis. The company provides lodging, vehicles, and
miscellaneous expenses for the duration of tours, including
rehearsal periods. Transportation to Minneapolis is provided
for out-of-town actors. Actors are paid salary plus per diem
twice per month. A stipend is paid for the rehearsal period.
Tour partners share a hotel room while in rehearsal and on the
road. Often 2-person troupes are comprised of members of the
opposite sex.
Tours range from 1 week to 12 weeks in length, with the majority of tours lasting 8 to 10 weeks. Rehearsals take place in Minneapolis for
approximately 7 days.
While on tour, actors handle set up and strike of sets and
also take care of minor up-keep. An average day consists of performing
a total of four shows at two schools, although some days may
require less or more. Each show runs approximately 27 minutes.
Tour coordinators, who make every effort to ensure a good tour,
schedule all tours. On any given day there are up to 20 separate
troupes performing in 20 different states. Obviously, this requires
a highly efficient support staff working out of the home office
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their main priority is to guarantee
you a great tour.
